How to prevent and cure pulled muscles

Warm up before exercising

Pulling muscles is no fun, but with a little more information you can learn how to cure or even prevent future muscle pulls.

What Is Meant By A Pulled Muscle?

When muscle fibres are torn, this painful injury is known as pulling muscles. Failing to warm up properly before engaging in strenuous physical activity is the usual cause for pulling muscles.

Pulling muscles is also common when an out-of-shape individual attempts to perform some kind of strenuous activity.

The most commonly affected muscle is the hamstring; however, any muscle in the body can sustain this type of injury. The hamstring is the muscle that goes all along the back of your thigh from the buttocks to the joint of the knee.

No matter where the location of the injury is, pulling muscles causes severe pain that only continues to get worse and worse. In addition, the site of the injury may remain bruised for at least a day or two as well.

How to Cure Pulled Muscles

Although there are no known remedies that will cause a pulled muscle to advance in the healing process any faster, there are a number of ways that you can treat your pulled muscle in order to improve function and reduce pain.

The first thing that you need to do if you believe you have pulled a muscle is to use an ice pack. Immediately place an ice pack on the site of the injury. Doing this will work to keep the swelling down to a minimum, which will in turn help to ease the pain from pulling muscles.

The next thing you need to do is wrap the afflicted muscle with an elastic band that will effectively decrease the impact of any stress that occurs from pulling muscles.

Many people use a homeopathic remedy, such as rubbing the affected area with arnica cream to relieve pulled muscles. This is a cream that quickly absorbs into your skin, and best of all, it is safe to use on people of any age. This remedy has a reputation for efficiently bringing relief to injured and overexerted muscles.

Stretching can prevent you from pulling muscles

Stretching can help but use with caution

Another treatment that many people have tried to alleviate the pain of pulling muscles is stretching.

However, it is critical that you use caution if you choose to try this method or you may end up making the injury worse, especially if you attempt to stretch too soon after pulling muscles. When you stretch pulled muscles, you should not ever push them to a point that causes you pain.

Applying heat to the affected area after pulling muscles is another treatment method that many people with this type of injury have found to be beneficial. Instead of using a heating pad, which is dry heat, try a warm shower or bath. The moist heat is much better after pulling muscles.

A warm bath will soothe the muscles, thus reducing the pain and discomfort. This is due to the fact that it increases the blood flow and improves the body's metabolism and circulation. A warm bath also relaxes pulled muscles and helps calm muscle spasms and relieves stiffness in tendons and ligaments. Add a little Epsom salt to your bath water to aid in the relief of muscle aches and pains.

How You Can Prevent Pulling Muscles in the Future

In order to prevent pulling muscles again in the future, make sure you stay in good enough shape to perform the activities that you want to do. Before you begin any physical activity, it is important to practice adequate stretching techniques to keep from pulling muscles.

Remember to take it slow if you are beginning a new physical routine to prevent pulling muscles, especially if the exertion involved is higher than your normal activity level.
