Helpful Tips for Weight Lifting

Tips when weight lifting

What is weight lifting?

There is a lot of confusion among the uninitiated about weightlifting, with many confusing weight training and body building with weight lifting.

The first tip for weight lifting is to know that it is a sport not an exercise.

Equipment used in weight lifting

Almost everyone, whether they are interested in weight lifting or not, knows that weight lifters use free weights, that is, barbells and dumbbells when training. However there are lots more machines and accessories that are used in weight lifting.

Some of these machines are used for various purposes. So be prepared when you ask for tips on weight lifting to hear the names of equipment you never heard of before.

Weight lifting gloves and belts are standard required gear. Weight lifting gloves help protects the lifter's hands as well as provide an improved grip. The belt provides some protection against back injuries when lifting.

How to lift correctly

The first part of any weight lifting exercise involves warming up. Failure to do so will result in injury to muscles. Next, remember that most of the power used for lifting comes not from the arms or knees, but your back. In weight lifting, the following areas are trained:

  • Back
  • Chest
  • Legs
  • Thighs
  • Abdomen
  • Shoulders
  • Arms

To lift weight properly you must have the right form; this means how you lift the weight not how much weight you can lift. Proper form also involves a routine that ensures that your muscle development is uniform. This can only be achieved by using a program where no area is overlooked.

Learning how to stand and lift the weights is also important, as is performing any of the exercises necessary to build muscle strength and size. Here are a few tips for muscle building where how you work, that is form in the lingo of weight training, comes in:

  • Do not lift too fast or too slow
  • If you are a beginner, follow standard routine of bouncing the weights as you lift
  • Not jerking or bouncing can be beneficial to the experienced weight lifter, as it allows some amount of strength training.

How to weight lift safely

Weight lifting can be a dangerous sport or exercise if certain precautions are not taken. The following safety tips for weight lifting are important:

  • Always have a spotter with you when lifting. A spotter will help you handle heavy weights; weight lifting training is a team sport
  • Wear the proper gear for comfort and safety
  • Have a professional trainer present when training
  • Do not over train, three days per week at the gym in normally sufficient

Following tips for weight lifting will help you build stronger, bigger muscles, but finding the right technique for you will take time. The same training routine will not work for everyone as genetics, age and overall health will impact how one routine works for each individual. Take time to find the best technique for you.
